Digital Safeguarding Lead Online Course

Digital Safeguarding Lead Online Course

Course Introduction

As an existing Designated Safeguarding Lead, you already hold statutory authority, experience, and oversight. This course builds on your established expertise, introducing digital safeguarding as a distinct, specialist domain that sits within your remit but requires dedicated knowledge, tools, and leadership.

Digital harm does not stay online; it follows children into studios, classrooms, and homes. KCSIE 2026 has elevated digital safeguarding from guidance to explicit statutory duty , meaning you must lead it, evidence it, and sustain it.

This course will not repeat core DSL fundamentals you already know. Instead, it will map digital risks directly to your existing decision-making frameworks, equip you to interpret and apply KCSIE 2026 digital-specific updates, show how ISD 2026 applies to screenshots, messages, and online evidence, give you repeatable incident response pathways for AI, deepfakes, and image abuse, and build your confidence to lead staff, challenge gaps, and assure governors.

Modules:

Module 1 — Statutory frameworks and your enhanced role

Module 2 — Emerging digital risks and threat landscape

Module 3 — Incident response, evidence and referral

Module 4 — Leadership, culture and sustained improvement

Course Aims

This specialist course builds on your existing Designated Safeguarding Lead expertise to establish digital safeguarding as a distinct, statutory, and fully integrated leadership responsibility. Its aims are:

  • To ensure full, confident application of KCSIE 2026, Information Sharing Duty 2026, Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026, and all relevant UK legislation, recognising digital safeguarding as an explicit duty, not an optional extra.
  • To equip you to identify, recognise early signs of, and respond to rapidly evolving digital threats including AI-generated harm, deepfakes, image abuse, grooming, sextortion, county lines recruitment, and peer-on-peer harassment.
  • To define consistent, defensible pathways for incident response, evidence preservation, lawful information sharing, multi-agency referral, and victim support, fully aligned with data protection requirements.
  • To strengthen your leadership in embedding a proactive safeguarding culture — training staff, building trusted student reporting routes, engaging parents, and assuring governors of robust oversight.
  • To establish sustainable systems, audits, and review cycles that adapt as risks evolve, ensuring digital safeguarding remains proactive rather than reactive.
  • To uphold the core principle: every child protected, every concern taken seriously, information shared safely and early, and action followed through completely.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and discharge your enhanced statutory digital safeguarding duties under KCSIE 2026, ISD 2026, and Working Together 2026.
  • Apply the three statutory information-sharing tests to digital evidence and share lawfully, promptly, and proportionately without waiting for consent where risk exists.
  • Recognise emerging digital threats — including deepfakes, nudification, and online exploitation — and trigger the correct multi-agency response without delay.
  • Preserve digital evidence correctly, report to IWF and police when required, and support those affected without re-traumatisation.
  • Enforce statutory mobile phone and filtering/monitoring policies with consistent authority across all staff and students.
  • Lead staff training, student education, and parent partnership to embed digital safety as a shared responsibility.
  • Conduct meaningful audits, report assurance to governors, and update practice continuously as new risks emerge.
