Course Overview

This short e-learning programme is designed for all Irish dance Adjudicators, Teachers, assistants, and volunteers who work with young dancers. It aims to give you a practical understanding of child protection and safeguarding issues relevant to your role. 

This Introduction to Child Protection Awareness / Safeguarding Children course provides a clear overview of your specific responsibilities within Irish dance. It will help you feel confident in recognising signs of harm or abuse, knowing how to report concerns correctly, and ensuring the safety and welfare of every dancer remains at the heart of your teaching and studio activities.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and this training meets the standards expected by Irish Dance governing bodies such as An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG), the World Irish Dance Association (WIDA), An Chomhdháil, Croi Neamhspleách Rince Gaeilge, CNRG (Croí Neamhspleách Rince Gaeilge) and child protection authorities in Ireland and the UK. Completing this course fulfils your mandatory requirement to hold up to date safeguarding knowledge.

Written at an introductory level, no prior training is needed. It is suitable for all roles in  Irish Dance: SDCRG, Adjudicators (ADCRG), Lead teachers (TCRG), assistant teachers, supervisors, full time and part time staff, as well as volunteers.

Module One: Understanding Safeguarding and Your Role as an Irish Dance Teacher

Module Two: Recognising Abuse, Harm and Poor Practice

Module Three: Responding, Reporting and Creating a Safe Irish Dance Culture

 

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define safeguarding, child protection and the main types of abuse (including online harm) relevant to Irish dance settings.
  • Recognise possible signs of harm in young dancers, and tell the difference between non-accidental injury and dance-related accidents.
  • Understand your legal duties and the safeguarding standards required by Irish dance governing bodies and UK/Irish authorities.
  • Respond safely if a dancer discloses harm, listen calmly, avoid leading questions, never promise to keep secrets.
  • Report concerns correctly via your school’s designated lead, governing body or statutory services, with accurate, objective records.
  • Apply safe working practices in class, one-to-one coaching, changing areas, feiseanna, travel and social media/photography
  • Promote a child-centred studio culture where every dancer feels safe, respected and able to speak up.
  • Know where to access further safeguarding support and guidance for your role.

Assessment Method

After completing each module there will be a quiz to assess your learning. You will move through the later modules upon successful completion of the quiz test. This process continues till the end of the course. 

You need to achieve and overall score of 70% correct answers to pass this online course.
